A very small island on the backwaters of Alappuzha (Alleppey), Pathiramanal is a haven for hundreds of rare birds migrating from different part of the world. Lies between Thanneermukkom and Kumarakom, it's a beautiful island in Kerala surrounded by the Vembanad Lake. A visit to Pathiramanal is an ideal way to enjoy holiday amidst the emerald green backwaters and coconut trees.

Sprawled over 10 acres of land, it's a serene island that enthralls leisure travelers and nature lovers from India and abroad. It is half an hour drive by motorboat or 30 minutes by speedboat from Alappuzha. Tourists can take boats which ply in Muhamma-Kumarakom water route.Pathiramanal is a serene island which has plenty of stories focused on it. It is believed that there was a young Brahmin who jumped into the Vembanad Lake to execute his evening ablutions and that portion of water made way for land rising from below, hence making this enrapturing island of Pathiramanal.

Pathiramanal Island named earlier as Anantha Padmanabhan Thoppu was bought by Chevalier ACM Anthraper from M/S Bheemji and Devji trust of Kochi and till late 70's, it was under their ownership. Then in the year 1979 when the land reforms act was enforced, the property came under the ownership of government. Later on, the state tourism department took the ownership of this Pathiramanal Island.

The island is a birdwatcher's paradise. It is home to around 91 local species of birds and 50 migratory birds. One can see pintail ducks, common teal, night heron, cormorant, darter, Indian shag, purple heron, gulls, terns, large egrets, intermediate egret, cattle egret, Indian pond heron, little egret, pheasant-tailed and bronze-winged jacanas, stork-billed kingfisher, watercock, whistling duck, cotton pygmy-goose, little cormorant and whiskered tern. Some people have even reported seeing the monarch flycatcher.

The island is an hour and half drive by motor boat or 30 minutes by speed boat from Alappuzha town. One can also take the boats plying in the Muhamma-Kumarakom water route. The SWTD boats plying in the Muhamma-Kumarakom water route no longer stops at Pathiramanal. It takes around 40 minutes from Kumarakom to reach Pathiramanal. The journey through Vembanad Lake is a marvellous experience. The best way to reach Pathiramanal is by renting a boat from Kayippuram jetty, which is just about 1 km east of the Kayippuram junction on the Alappuzha - Thannirmukkam road.
